98 Custom top mount

I recently bought a used 98 Custom (with 4 CO2 tanks, and 2 masks) on caigslist for $80. It is in excellent shape, but it seems to be an older model. The top accessory mounting rail is not a "picatinny" or "weaver" rail, with slots running from side to side. What does that make it? Is it a "dovetail" mount? Since it's in good shape, and works just fine, I'm not too upset about this, but I don't want to buy accessories that won't fit on the rail. Thanks in advance...

I believe the newer 98cs have picatinny rails and the older ones have just a dovetail mount. I don't know about the original 98s pre-custom but I do know for long time it was dovetail or nothing for Tippmanns unless you bought a dovetail to picatinny rail. It kind of sucked since the only accessories you could buy were for pellet guns so no super duper 80000x miliary-grade death laserscope. :(

It's a 98 Custom, NOT an old school 98. It does have a top rail, just not a PICATINNY rail. The rail looks narrower, and doesn't have the sideways grooves to combat recoil like a weaver or picatinny. Does that make this an oldie? I don't care... 1st pb gun and I LOVE IT!

My take is that its one of the first generations of the 98 Custom that you have there. The early 98C's were just an easier to customize Model 98. Newer 98C's have the picatinny rail on top and a lot of internal changes that make them...undesirable to some people.

Anyway, its a dovetail rail, two sizes. I think 3/8 and....whatever the other one is. You could use a dovetail base which would clamp on and serve as a picatinny style rail or just get dovetail accessories.
