Just wanted to put my views on Field positions so that people can tell me where they agree or disagree.
While websites that are obviously trying to sell us gear (Special Ops Paintball - We Are Woodsball) tell us that there are all these field positions (Dagger, Sabre, Broadsword and Hammer, sniper etc), I have found from my experience that these exist mostly on paper. Since paintguns are not permitted to shoot more that 300 fps, players shoot with more or less same range / effectiveness. In a real paintball scenario, only two positions would exist and that is
1. Players who like to charge and shoot up close
2. PLayers who enjoy long balling from a distance
In a real game there will also be a lot of situations where the above two roles would get totally switched. (E.g Guys charging in the front get eliminated and have to go to the spawning area and guys who were giving covering fire would move up and take the advancing role).
The re-spawn rule in the game totally dismantles any structured squad, because unless the whole squad gets shot simultaniously, squad-members will be re-entering the game on different times.
In order to sell certain types of gear, I found that some positions were over-glorified on woodsball websites. (Example from Special Ops Paintball - We Are Woodsball "If you are the dagger, then you are probably the most aggressive member of the team. The glory boy... yada yada") I see this as a marketing attempt to sell 4 inch barrels and patches and vests that dont hold much etc.
There are many internet quizes that quiz you on what player position you are. Surprisingly most players like to believe they are daggers! (Some 40 - 60 %) This has more to do with over-glorification of that position then how one actually scores his/her kills.
Looking forward to your thoughts/ comments etc.
Thanks.
